KIDS  be pro-active for your family. Develop an escape plan!

Practice   E.D.I.T.H.    -   Exit Drills In The Home

  • Include everyone in your home in the planning.
  • Make a map of two exits from every room!
  • Make sure you know how to open the windows and that they open easily.
  • Make sure you're exits are not blocked!
  • Designate a safe meeting spot for everyone to gather in an emergency.
  • Call 9-1-1- from outside the home!
  • Be sure to check your smoke detectors once a month.
  • Replace the battery once a year - A good time to change the battery is during the Fall when we move the clocks back!.
  • Practice you escape plan!

To escape a fire, Stay low to the floor, cover your mouth and nose with a cloth or towel until you can get out of the home.

If your clothes catch fire, STOP!  DROP! and ROLL!!

Cover your face (nose eyes and mouth) with your hands to protect your throat and lungs. Roll until the flames are out!

If you are in a room, go to the door and feel it with the back of your hand: if its hot, use your second exit.  If you can't get out, hang a sheet from the window to let firefighters know you are there!

  • Remember, once you are out, Stay out!
  • Go to your designated meeting spot.
  • Then call 911 !
  • When the fire department arrives be prepared to tell one of the fire fighters whether everyone is out, and if all the pets are out of the building.
  • Take the time to make a drawing of your escape routes,
  • like this one.
